What is a cookie?

A cookie is a message given to a web browser by a web server. The browser stores the message in a text file called cookie.txt. The message is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server.

The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and possibly prepare customised web pages for them. When you enter a website which is using cookies, you may be asked to fill out a form providing such information as your name and interests. This information is packaged into a cookie and sent to your web browser, which stores it for later use. The next time you go to the same website, your browser will send the cookie to the web server. The server can use this information to present you with custom web pages. So, for example, instead of seeing just a generic welcome page, you might see a welcome page with your name on it.

The name cookie derives from UNIX objects called magic cookies. These are tokens that are attached to a user or program and change depending on the areas entered by the user or program. Cookies are also sometimes called persistent cookies because they typically stay in the browser for long periods of time.

Passwords

When you register with The Company you provide a username and password that can later be used to log in to our secure facilities. This username and password is linked to your customer reference number and consequently allows you to access information about your rights.

We encourage you to change your password frequently. It is important that you use a password that cannot be easily guessed and that you do not let anyone else know your password.

We tightly control the management of usernames and passwords. One of the ways we do this is to ask you to provide two sets of questions and answers which we call "shared secrets". Shared secrets are known only to you and The Company. These secrets provide an additional method of verifying your identity in case you forget your password or need other assistance in relation to your rights.

The Company uses 128 bit SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption, the highest level of encryption currently available. This is a widely-used web technology that encrypts and decrypts a message for online transmission.

In the changing world of technology, we understand that while this technology is suitable for today, newer technologies may provide stronger security, better efficiency and greater convenience in the future. Hence, we are constantly reviewing newer technologies as they mature and become available.

How do I know my information is being encrypted?

Once you have logged in to the website you are in a "secure session" and all information passing between you and The Company is encrypted.
